Sex Change For Cabbage Patch Doll
Some people would argue that a doll, whether it be male or female, is not for boys. My mom felt differently one Christmas when Cabbage Patch dolls were all the rage. I had two of these creepy eyed dolls, but I wasn’t the only child in the house who wanted one.
My brother who is 5 years younger than me wanted one too. After a lot of searching my mother found a doll dressed as an astronaut, complete with helmet and all. The yellow boxed doll was purchased, brought home and wrapped for Christmas morning.
Each Cabbage Patch doll comes complete with a birth certificate and apparently my mom did not bother to look and see what this doll’s assigned name was. All that mattered was that she’d purchased what looked like a male astronaut doll for my brother. It had red hair just like he did and it was the last one.
To this day I can still remember the look on my brother’s face when he opened the his gift. As he peeled the wrapping paper back he smiled with delight thinking he had gotten exactly what he wanted. Then, he opened the box and removed the space helmet to find that his doll had a ponytail and the crying began!
My mom did what any mom would do in that situation. She grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the pony tail off. Who knew you could change a dolls sex with such a simple operation.

My name is Emily. I’m 30 years old. I have often been told that I ask a lot of questions, but I think I have more to say than ask.

I had no idea you were the daughter of a surgeon! ;p
Your mom rocks!
My boys have cabbage patch dolls, their grandma thought they should have them. They are well loved.
I THINK FENICLE FORGOT THE PART WHERE SHE LAUGHED AND MADE FUN OF HER BROTHER BECAUSE HE GOT A GIRL DOLL FOR CHRISTMAS. DURING THE ENTIRE CHRISTMAS SEASON EVERYONE WITHIN MILES KNEW THAT HE WAS THE ONLY BOY THAT GOT A GIRL DOLL AS A PRESENT………..
Hee!!! Love that he wanted a doll. Love that the progressive doll menufacturers thwarted your mum’s attempt to buy a boy doll. Love that cutting off a ponytail was the solution!
It sounds like it could have been traumatic and your mom’s quick thinking saved the day.
Does your brother remember the incident? My five year old grandson who was raised with two sisters who constantly brought home their cheerleader friends and would show Noah how to cheer etc.. Noah thinks dolls are great…(hope he outgrows them)
